Pool Filter Service - Tulsa & Surrounding Areas
Your pool filter is the heart of any pool system. They do not just keep your water clean, but also healthy for you and your family. However, a pool filter can become clogged or dirty with debris which will reduce its ability to do the job it was designed to do.
This can have a significant impact on not only your family's health but also the quality of water in your pool. It is important that you take care of this vital piece of equipment so that it can continue doing its important work for many years to come.
At the center of your pool plumbing system & equipment is a very key component - the filter. Without it, your pool water would never be clear, and the same if you do not care for it properly and clean regularly. You can hire a pool-filter cleaning service, or you can do it yourself.
What is a Pool Filter Sytem?
A pool filter system is a mechanical device that removes debris from the water in a pool. It is typically installed at the bottom of the pool and contains a filter cartridge, a pump, and a motor. The filter cartridge traps dirt and small particles so they can be disposed of or cleaned from time to time.
The pump forces the water through the cartridge, which helps remove dirt from the water. A pool filer system can be one of three types:
Pool Filter Maintenance
Sand Filter
Sand filters use specially graded sand as the filter media. The water enters the tank through the diffuser. As the water goes down through the bed of sand, the dirt and debris are trapped between the grains of sand. When the water reaches the bottom of the filter, it enters the laterals and is returned to the pool.
Sand filters filter out debris down to about 40 microns in size. Anything smaller than 40 microns will probably not be filtered out. Filter sand should be replaced every 3-5 years.
Cartridge Pool Filters
Cartridge filters use a paper-type cartridge as the filter media. They do not filter as finely as DE, and in our experience produce about the same water quality as sand filtration.
Cartridge filters used to have a bad reputation as a nuisance to maintain, but manufacturers have come up with newer filters with enough surface area (300-500 square feet) to need cleaning only once or twice each year. This makes the maintenance issue a plus with these filters.
DE Pool Filters
DE filters use diatomaceous earth as a filter media. The DE filter has plastic grids covered with a plastic-type of fabric. A layer of filter powder called Diatomaceous Earth covers the grids and does the filtering.
As the water passes through the filter powder, any debris down to 5-8 microns is filtered out. Because the DE is much finer than sand, it is able to filter much more finely than a sand filter.
DE powder needs to be added every time you vacuum and then backwashed afterward. Grid replacement can also be expensive.

Pool Filter and Pool Service
How Do Pool Filter Systems Work?
A pool-filter system works like a sieve to clean and filter out dirt and other particles from swimming pool water. The filter typically sits below the surface of the water and has an opening at the top that leads into the pump. The pump pushes dirty water through the filter. Dirt and other particles become trapped within the filter as it moves through, thus cleaning out your swimming pool water.
Get your Pool Service - Don’t Void Your Swimming Pool's Warranty
Most swimming pool-filter manufacturers and swimming pool builders require regular filter cleanings to ensure warranties are not voided. They usually recommend filter cleanings every 3-6 months, depending on filter type and manufacturer.
It’s worth it to obtain a pool service for your pool for the savings on electricity alone. The number of amps drawn when running your pool with a clean filter is substantially decreased.
Why is it important to maintain your filter?
A pool filter is a necessary part of any swimming pool. It is responsible for keeping the water clean and clear. A pool filter can become clogged or dirty with debris, which will reduce its ability to do the job it was designed to do.
This can have a significant impact on not only your family's health but also the quality of water in your pool. For example, if you have a clogged filter that isn't capable of removing particulate matter from the water then algae and bacteria will grow much faster, due to lack of competition from other organisms.
In addition, you could be exposed to harmful chemicals when swimming in your pool because these dangerous compounds are not being removed from the water.
Key for maintaining your Filter system and Pool cleaning
It is important to maintain your pool-filter system because it will ensure that the water in your pool is safe for you and your family. Here are some tips to avoid clogging the filter with debris:
- Turn off your pump before you clean the filter to lessen air bubbles.
- Rinse all cleaners off of your pool's surfaces before turning back on the pump.
- Make sure to change out filters when necessary, which varies depending on how much debris they are collecting and how often they are cleaned.
- Turn off the pump and allow your filter to dry between cleanings.
By following these simple tips, you can avoid unnecessary pool problems and keep the water in your pool as healthy and clean as possible for yourself and your family.
Other Ways You Can Support Your Pool Filter Cleaning
Your filter, ultimately, is a relatively simple piece of kit. It can only filter so much, so keeping on top of general pool cleanliness will also help your filter to last longer.
- Make sure you strain big debris, such as leaves, to avoid them getting into the filter.
- Keep on top of the pool’s chemical balance, as this can lead to increased bacteria in the filter.
- Reduce the number of natural oils and sunscreens that end up in the pool, as these will go through the filter system.
- Properly close your pool for the winter to ensure no excess strain is placed on filter systems.
When to Replace the Pool Filter
While proper maintenance can extend the lifespan of your filter, there will always come a time when the media or filter itself needs replacing.
If you notice that cloudy or dirty water is coming out of your filter system, this could be a sign that the media inside needs replacing. Sand media usually needs to be replaced every five years.
If you notice more severe problems with your filter, such as a huge swing in pressure or sudden water loss, this could point to a more critical issue with your pump system.

Common problems with the Pool Filter and their solutions
One of the most common swimming pool filter problems is that it’s clogged. You can solve this problem by rinsing or soaking the pool filter in a bucket of water for two hours to remove any debris that has accumulated on the filter. If this doesn’t work, you may need to disconnect the hose intake and pour water back and forth through it several times to dislodge any debris inside.
Another common pool-filter problem is that it’s simply dirty. You can solve this problem by unclogging the pool filter, using an appropriate cleaner, and then re-clogging it. It may take some trial and error before you find out what works best for your pool filter.
