Gunite Pool Maintenance & Repair
Gunite Pool Maintenance & Repair: What You Need to Know
Gunite pools are a great alternative for those of us who are looking for something that is aesthetically pleasing, affordable and easy to maintain.
Gunite pool maintenance doesn't require the same kind of work as your typical concrete or vinyl liner pools. It is completely different. It is made up of high-density concrete that is then sprayed with layers of gunite material that not only looks beautiful but also makes it much easier to clean.
This kind of pools are so durable because they can stand up against anything Mother Nature throws at them, making them an excellent choice for any homeowner who wants a pool that will last.
Common Gunite Pool Problems
Before looking at how to fix your gunite pool, it’s important to know about common issues for concrete swimming pools.
Every type of swimming pool has its own advantages and disadvantages and Gunite pools are no exception and here are common problems we can face if we have a gunite pool:
- Cracks and Leaks - although just about any pool can crack, some pools are prone to crack more. Most concrete pools will crack at some point. Especially if the pool is old.
- Rough Pool Surface- if you find that your concrete pool is extremely rough to the point where slightly grazing the surface with your knee while swimming leaves a nasty scratch, your pool surface is too rough.
- Pool Lifting from ground - concrete pools can occasionally pop out of the ground.
- Plaster Flaking off - plaster is one of the most common finishes for gunite pools. As with cracks, improper plastering techniques during installation is often the culprit to blame.
- Pool Discoloration - concrete is porous, so it readily absorbs stains. While discoloration is a more minor issue for concrete pools, it’s one that leaves many a pool owner frustrated. Imbalanced water chemistry is often to blame for the discoloration.
Pool Maintenance and Repairs
Long term pool maintenance is also essential to the health of your swimming pool, even for gunite based pools.Luckily, the process is not too complicated.
The main two things to keep in mind are repairing cracks and replacing the plaster or epoxy bonding agents on top of them. Seek a pool restoration expert for the best solution for your pool.
Make sure to keep a keen eye on your pool’s condition every few months or so. If you start to notice any cracks then you’ll have to drain the pool, install large staples to fill in the cracks and then place a couple layers of epoxy and other plasters to finish up the seal.
It takes a bit of time and money but the odds are you won’t have to do it very often if you opted for a gunite inground pool that was installed in an ideal location.
Maintaining your Gunite Swimming Poo
There are few things that you need to know when maintaining a Gunite Pool
- It will be more prone to algae growth. To counter this, you will find yourself using more chemicals and filtration as well as brushing your pool more often to remove any algae.
- Gunite and shotcrete surfaces may need to be refinished. Unlike, say, fiberglass or vinyl liner pools, gunite and shotcrete will eventually show signs of wear. To maintain the smooth surface and attractive appearance, you’ll eventually need to re-finish your pool’s surface, which means adding a fresh layer of finish.
- Whether you have a concrete, a fiberglass, a vinyl lined, or any other type of inground pool, routine swimming pool care which includes things like testing your water and adding chemicals, cleaning and scrubbing surfaces, and cleaning and maintaining your filter will keep it in great shape.
Do It Yourself or Hire a Pool Service Expert and Builders
A gunite pool is a great option for homeowners who are looking for a pool that will stand the test of time.
Properly maintained, gunite can last up to 50 years or more, but there are some things you need to know before starting this project.
It is important to hire a company that specializes in gunite pools when it comes time for repair or maintenance.
A qualified service technician will be able to advise you on the best chemicals and steps to take in order keep your gunite looking its best. When hiring a pool service, look for someone with several years of experience in dealing with gunite pools.
If you choose to do the work yourself, make sure you know exactly what you are doing. Ensure that all tools and parts are safe for use with a concrete surface before beginning any repair project. Always wear protective eye gear when working with equipment near water as well as proper coveralls or clothing that will not be ruined or discolored.

Cleaning Debris
Unfortunately, there’s really no way to avoid it with an outdoor pool. However, neglecting to clear away debris increases your risk for algae growth and circulation issues. Use a long-handled net to clear away debris from the surface and bottom of the pool.
The first step is to have them all out. Begin with scrubbing the pool’s walls and the floor as well. Make sure that you use swimming pool manufacturer recommended vacuums and cleaners.
Clean the Filter
A good quality filtration system will play a major role in keeping your water clear. The filter’s role is to remove debris and harmful chemicals in the pool water. If your pool is old or you have a frequent issue with algae, it might be time your filtration needs upgrading.
Your filter is critical in keeping your pool water clean and pleasant to swim in. As it filters out dirt and grime from your water, it also needs to be cleaned regularly.
Check for Leaks
Assemble the filter and pump and perform a leak inspection before using it in the pool. Doing this each year as part of your prep work will minimize the chances of a surprise leak midway through the season.
Chemical Balance
Keeping the water from becoming too acidic provides a comfortable swimming experience for you and your family, while preventing the water from becoming too basic helps prevent algae growth. Balancing the chlorine also ensures the water stays clean and clear. You should test your pool water every 7-10 days.
Maintain Correct Water Level
It’s important to maintain adequate water levels so your skimmers can properly filter the water. If you have an automatic water supply, you may not have to worry about this part. However, if you ever need to add more water, you can do so at any time with a garden hose. Make sure to rebalance the chemicals each time you add water.
Prevent Algae Growth
If algae are not checked, one small colony will turn out to be an infestation very quickly. Use algaecides properly to prevent algae growth. Add them to the swimming pool every week, and that will keep things in control. If your pool has algae, then our technicians can recommend products meant to quickly get rid of algae.
Replastering
A highly effective for poos problems such as rough pool surfaces, flaking plaster and surface cracks.
Acid Washing
This may be used to fix an overly rough pool surface, as calcium deposits might contribute to this issue in many cases.
Plumbing Repairs
This can take a very long time, often requiring repair specialists to remove large parts of the pavement or concrete poolside to gain access to the plumbing leak.

I loved the professionalism and knowledge that the technician demonstrated. The employee performed a wonderful job cleaning the pool and maintain the equipment; and the office staff I spoke with was both wonderful and patient. I highly recommend this service!Posted on GoogleSteffani GrandeAfter several attempts with other companies we FINALLY found Elite Pool Service. As first time pool owners in 2020, it was difficult to find someone to just explain the basics and help me understand how to maintain a pool. They have been amazing! We have been working with them for over a year and they have treated me with respect and patience answering all my questions and helping me learn how to maintain our pool. They replaced the old original pool pump with an upgraded one with a scheduler, which I love. The weekly service over the Summer has taken so much stress off my plate and our pool has been in great condition. I am no longer dreading another Summer of pool care.
